Reconstructive Breast Surgery

Breast malformations are extremely variable, common, and can be distressing in everyday life. They are most often due to a developmental anomaly of one or both breasts, but may also be secondary to trauma such as a childhood burn, or to previous surgery. Young women affected by these conditions do not always dare to talk about them, and the deformity can become a source of anxiety and unspoken suffering.

Sometimes, even in cases of significant malformation, the first consultation occurs very late, beyond the age of thirty, after a difficult adolescence and a certain degree of withdrawal.

General information

Breast malformations affect a large proportion of women, with severity ranging from mild partial alterations to complete malformation of the mammary gland.

Often, these irregularities may go unnoticed by the person concerned, as in the case of tuberous breasts, leading to an initial consultation for what is thought to be a simple breast augmentation.

The main causes can be classified as follows : congenital breast anomalies, often of genetic origin, which may occur alone or in association with other malformations such as supernumerary breasts or nipples, and breast anomalies resulting from trauma or surgery, particularly following breast cancer.

Coverage by health insurance may depend on the nature and severity of the breast anomaly.

Indications

Reconstructive breast surgery addresses all types of breast deformities or asymmetries and uses techniques developed in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery, allowing for fully customized treatment.

Simple breast asymmetry, tuberous breasts, or Poland syndrome are the main congenital deformities commonly treated. Funnel chest, keel chest, and severe scoliosis can also cause deformities that may be mistaken for breast anomalies.

Techniques

The different techniques used by Dr Prevot include :

Breast reshaping surgery

This generally refers to a surgical procedure aimed at modifying the shape and or size of the breasts for reconstructive or aesthetic reasons. It is particularly sought after by women wishing to improve the appearance of their breasts after pregnancy or significant weight loss. Breast reshaping may include reduction, lifting, or augmentation, depending on the patient’s needs and wishes.

Autologous fat grafting or fat injection

This reconstructive technique uses the patient’s own fat to reshape and redefine the contour of the breasts. Fat is harvested from another area of the body such as the abdomen or thighs and then reinjected into the breasts. It is an attractive option for those seeking a more natural approach to reconstruction or augmentation without implants.

Breast augmentation with implants

This surgical procedure aims to increase breast size and improve shape by inserting implants filled with silicone gel or saline solution. It is often chosen by women who wish to increase breast volume or restore shape after pregnancy or weight loss. Implants may be placed under the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue, depending on the patient’s anatomy and Dr Prevot’s recommendations.

Results

The results of reconstructive breast surgery can provide significant relief and a marked aesthetic change for individuals affected by trauma, cancer related surgery, or congenital malformations. This type of surgery aims not only to restore the physical appearance of the breasts, but also to strengthen self confidence and improve psychological well being.

Results may be observed shortly after surgery, although the final appearance develops over the following months. The goal is to achieve a natural and symmetrical breast shape, restoring a harmonious and balanced silhouette while respecting the patient’s wishes and ensuring safety and long term durability.
