For some children, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery is unfortunately a necessity. When they suffer from minor malformations, severe birthmarks or serious scars, it is important to let them speak up and give them the opportunity to obtain the treatment they need to grow healthy and happy.
I have worked with children a lot throughout my career, especially at the Hôpital Necker-Enfants-Malades in Paris, in the craniofacial malformation and general surgery branches. All surgeons treating children agree on one thing: their impressive capacity to learn what they should and shouldn’t do as well as the great rapidity of their healing process. They are not limited by the psychological barriers that many adult patients suffer from and their bodies heal way faster.
The particularity of child surgery is that the children will continue to grow after the operation. This requires surgeons to take into account future physical transformations and adapt their methods accordingly. The operations that I perform on children are conducted either at the medical office with a parent present, or at the Grangettes clinic, which is perfectly equipped to ensure the child’s comfort.
The most common malformation is prominent ears, caused by a defect of the fold of the auricle resulting in the angle between the ear and the head being too large.
There are many other types of malformations, but when they are severe, they are usually treated during the first few years of the child’s life in specialized hospital services. Those incluse cleft lips, ear agenesis, extra or deformed fingers, and many others.
For this reason, I generally treat minor malformations or sequels from severe malformations that have already been treated.
