Labia majora augmentation

The labia majora, in continuity with the mons pubis, form the visible part of the female genital area and play an essential protective role for sensitive structures. They are covered with hair on their outer surface and are composed of sweat glands embedded in a layer of fatty tissue.

General information

The labia majora play a key role in the aesthetic and functional balance of the vulva. Loss of fatty tissue, whether related to age, hormonal changes, or weight fluctuations, may lead to functional discomfort (friction, irritation) or aesthetic concerns.

This form of gynecological aesthetic surgery responds to a growing number of women wishing to harmonize their intimate anatomy, often after changes related to aging, pregnancy, or weight loss. Some patients also report discomfort during activities such as cycling or running, where a lack of volume can cause repeated irritation.

Indications

This procedure is mainly intended for women presenting with atrophy of the labia majora. Over time, the labia majora may lose volume and, with it, their protective function. In such cases, a simple intervention can restore their original appearance.

Within the spectrum of intimate surgery, each technique addresses specific needs: nymphoplasty focuses on reshaping the labia minora, while monsplasty corrects the volume of the mons pubis.

Augmentation by lipofilling stands out for its ability to restore the original volume of the labia majora, with the major advantage of fully preserving natural sensitivity. Labia majora augmentation is also suitable for women with congenital asymmetry or post-menopausal atrophy. Some patients choose this procedure after significant weight loss, when local fat loss accentuates tissue laxity.

Others simply wish to regain a more youthful appearance, without seeking an excessive or artificial volumizing effect.

Technique

This procedure relies on an autologous fat grafting technique, known as microfat, as it uses small instruments and small quantities of tissue. Fat is harvested from an area where it is available, preferably in excess (such as the abdomen), and is delicately injected into the labia majora through very small entry points.

Intimate lipofilling provides more natural results than synthetic implants, with an almost nonexistent risk of rejection. The autologous fat, carefully purified, is injected in micro-droplets to optimize graft survival.

It is through a combination of technical precision, high standards, and delicacy that results truly meet patient expectations.

Procedure

The procedure is most often performed in a medico-surgical office, under local anesthesia. Light sedation may be offered to maximize comfort in addition to local anesthesia. Both the donor areas and the recipient areas are anesthetized. Fat harvesting is performed first, then the collected tissue is processed before being grafted through tiny openings located in the least sensitive areas of the labia majora.

The micro-incisions (less than 2 mm) avoid any visible scarring. At the end of the procedure, a drop of dermal adhesive is used to close the entry points. No dressing is required.

Postoperative care

Postoperative recovery is generally straightforward, although swelling may sometimes persist for up to one month. This intimate procedure is only mildly painful but requires careful hygiene to minimize any risk of infection. Mild sensitivity may last for a few weeks, without interfering with daily activities.

Bruising usually disappears within ten days, but the final shape is best appreciated after approximately three months, corresponding to the stabilization period of the fat graft. Wearing loose clothing and cotton underwear helps reduce friction.

No sick leave is required, and sexual and sporting activities are usually resumed after two to three weeks.

Results

The labia majora appear replenished, slightly fuller, and come together to varying degrees in the midline, restoring their protective role for the labia minora and sensitive areas. The plumping effect integrates harmoniously with the overall body morphology, including in the standing position.

Patients frequently report improved self-confidence and greater daily comfort, particularly during sports or when wearing fitted clothing. Once swelling has resolved, the final result is natural and well balanced, with no stiffness or artificial sensation.
